When a rental car wins
- Stays of a week or longer.
- Self-catering in a villa or condo with frequent grocery runs.
- You are comfortable driving on the left.
- You want to explore at your own pace over several days.
When a private driver wins
- Short stays of two to four days.
- Arrival and departure, particularly late at night or with young children.
- Dinners and evenings out. See dinner transfers.
- Sightseeing days. See island tours.
- You prefer not to navigate or park.
The cost question
A rental car looks cheaper until you add insurance, fuel, parking and the temporary driving licence if required. A driver looks expensive until you count the days you would not use the car.
A sensible mix
Many visitors book a private airport transfer, use taxis or a driver for dinners, and hire a driver for one big sightseeing day. That avoids the cost and effort of a rental for the whole stay.
Our view
If you are not sure, start with a driver for the first day and decide after you have seen the roads.
